Civilian Response to an Active Shooter Event

This will be a power point presentation by a Seattle PD Officer. The presentation is called ALERRT which is an acronym for (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training). The specific training that the Officer has received is called CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events). The subject of the presentation will be on the Civilian Response to an Active Shooter Event.

Presentation Description: Law enforcement officers and agencies are frequently requested by schools, businesses, and community members for direction and presentations on what they should do if confronted with an active shooter event. The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events course, designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend strategy developed by ALERRT in 2004, provides strategies, guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. Topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, the role of professional guardians, civilian response options, medical issues, and drills. This training supercedes the old mantra of Run, Hide, Fight. Studies have shown that those who chose to hide usually didn't fare too well.

The majority of the presentation is a Power Point video and the SPD officer will be speaking throughout the slides. There are somewhat graphic topics as a couple of case studies of shootings are looked at in detail but our group should be able to handle that ok.

The material presented is very much aligned with what we as ADTA members already doing however there is one point of difference. ALERRT uses a color code scheme to describe what happens to a victim physically (fear, motor skills, ability to think) when there is an escalation of threat to their lives. It differs from the Situational Awareness Color Code Scheme of Colonel Cooper that most of the shooting community and the Military has adopted.

The ALERRT color code deals with our fight or flight type of response and Colonel Cooper deals with Situational Awareness but then we often talk about what happens to our bodies during each stage of escalation (color code) which is where the confusion could come in.

Important information:

  • ADTA Range Safety Officers (RSOs) will be present to check you in at the door.
  • If you normally carry a firearm, you are welcome to do so at this event.

  • Loaded carry firearms must remain holstered -- no exceptions.
  • If you bring a firearm to show to the group, or want to participate in our hands-on exercises, our Range Safety Officers will help you safely unload and clear your firearm at the door.
